Analysis of literary digital works is often limited to what happens on-screen. The ‘digital’ specificity is passed in such an analyze. In this way, it seems that non-interactive programmed movies could have equally been recorded on videotape. Nevertheless, authors have been asserting since the 1990s, notably in France (Bootz, 1989; Balpe, 1997), that the program is a component of the work. That is why we need to change our mode of investigation to analyze how the program acts in the work.We will tackle this issue by analyzing Jean-Marie Dutey’s Le mange-texte and showing that the relationship between the program and linguistic components appearing on the screen is not causal but rhetoric and is crucial as regard the general interpretation of the work, including that of its linguistic manifestations. To do so, we will associate to do the theoretical ‘procedural model’ I develop since 1996 (Bootz 1996, 2001) with experimental manipulations of the work.We will begin this article by observing and and interpreting what a reader has read over time. We will then discuss how the program is related to these readings. Finally, we will examine the how the runing process influences the rhetoric of the work.
