Conducting field research on the topic of religion can prove to be particularly trying for the anthropologist who shares neither the faith, nor the religious culture of the communities in which they choose to work. Respecting the faith of others does not necessarily imply sympathy, and the latter does not imply adherence. This article analyses fieldwork conditions within an African Pentecostal Church, in Africa and in Europe. How does the unconverted anthropologist negotiate their presence, and even obtain a certain freedom to work, in such a proselyte environment where they are under intense and constant pressure to convert ?
